Hi Hannah,
Sorry I've taken so long to respond but have just returned from hols. I think Henry may have got Jessicas place as she has recently been allocated Birdwell place.
I hope everything goes well for you, I know its not as local as it should be but at least a very good school.

no joy there, the pannel did ask the lea questions about transport, so they were listening for a while. They were not very well infored on the rules and regs of what effect an additional pupil would have on the school. i.e. nothing for the first 12 month, an extra teacher is not required, and an new class room is also not required! This may need to be looked at in year 2 though

Hi, I spoke to Tamar today, I think you are seeing her tonight, she will probably have filled you in. Found a lot of info just working on a post for the Blog. We really need some legal advice. Just found a solicitor on the web that gives a free 15 mins will try them and see what they say.

Hi. The only moms I went round were the ones I knew from Nursery that have been given Flax places. I need to go back over possible Sat when more people home to catch some of the moms I don't know. Was wondering if it is raining if the co-op would let us stand inside. Will ask the manager when I go down in the morning. See you tomorrow !!

Dear Hannah
Didn't know about this bit on the blog, so have just seen your message re leaflets and article. I think question has been answered, maybe yourself , Anna, Tabs, myself and others could get together to finalise the leaflet and article. I am quite happy for Anna to do it, it was only an idea I came up with. I was hoping to be able to help from the scouts with distribution! But this is not feasible.

Hi Hannah,
I asked the council a while back and at that point there was one other child in Long Ashton due to attend West Leigh, however I guess from your comments this may now have changed.
I have requested appeal for both Birdwell and Flax, and these have been arranged for the end of April and 21st of May. I dont hold out too much hope though based on the fact that no one was succesful in the first round of appeals at Flax!

I got my answer today about why the council is so hung up on the 9000 new houses when there is demand now (I've been sent a Q&A sheet from the council - have you seen it? I've got a few letters it'd be worth uploading but I'm not sure where is the best place to do it.) The answer is because if they build a new school now, then the council has to pay for it, whereas if they wait then the developers pay for it. I can actually see their point to some extent - if they build a new school now, there will be spare places in the upper years so that when the developers come in, there will be a school with spare places which means they don't have to pay so much towards facilities (as has happened with the current develpment in LA). One potential solution to this might be for the Council need to provide a temporary measure - not a whole new school - there is no surplus demand in the upper years, but a reception class initially, then a new reception class as the orig one moves up, etc. The Q&A doc also implies there might be room for this at Birdwell. Although I guess they wouldn't want to start something they couldn't finish (i.e. sustain to year 6 if necessary) so this would probably be dependent on them being able to buy additional land at Birdwell.

About Me:
Lived in LA for 7 years. Moved here to start a family - local schools was one of the main criteria. My eldest, Henry (4) has been allocated Crockerne in Pill. We were unsuccessful in an allocation at any one of our preferred (and closest) schools. I'm furious with the Council for their lack of concern for our young children, demonstrated by the inadequate planning of places in the reception classes of our local schools following rapid expansion of our village. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that anything will be done for our son before September and so we will have to hope that a place becomes available in the next couple of years or move.

Sibling Link – Consultation for 2010 Admissions

Email to Bill Mcentee re Sibling Rule.doc

North Somerset are currently consulting (open to all) on the 2010 admission arrangements. This gives us a great opportunity to express our opinion about the newly amended sibling link rule.

Just to remind you…

The sibling link rule used to give preference within the over-subscripti… Continue

Sibling Link – The Adjudicator’s Determination

Thank you to everyone who supported our objection to the Council’s amendment to the Sibling Link rule. We had a great response from you all but unfortunately not such a great response from the Adjudicator.

We actually received the Adjudicator’s decision last week and I apologise for not updating you sooner – I think we were all just a bit too depressed.

As you will have gathered, we were unsuccessful in getting an amendment. If you want to read up on his reasoning please click the link (… Continue

Sibling Link Rule - PLEASE SUPPORT OUR OBJECTION!

A number of us have placed an objection to the Schools Adjudicator regarding the removal of the Sibling Link Rule for admissions from September 2009.

In the past, siblings have been given priority when allocating places at over-subscribed schools. Part of the reason that N. Somerset Council propose to change this rule is because children from Long Ashton have not been able to obtain a place at the local schools because priority has been given to children outside of the village with siblings at… Continue

Scrutiny Findings

The Council’s Scrutiny Panel met on Wednesday 23rd April to report back their recommendations regarding the Long Ashton schools situation. The minutes and the scrutiny report can be accessed here.

Bottom line (I think) is that the panel has concluded that extending Birdwell is too costly at the present time and alternatives are not acceptable. The recommendation… Continue

LGO Complaints

For anyone who has put in a complaint to the Local Government Ombudsman (see my blog dated 9th April), I have received a summary of my complaint from the investigator today which is as follows:

"that the Council failed to increase school capacity as required specifically by section 106 agreements related to housing developments in the local area over the past few years."

This is inaccurate (which I've raised with the investigator) as the Council has increased net capacity at both school… Continue
