Just a little bit of a discussion about the 'urban' solution of using an all-weather surface. She said it was inappropriate in a rural location. I pointed out that LA has been earmarked for 'urban development' and that they couldn't have it both ways. I suggested that the Council's 'urbanisation' of LA had caused the problem and that an urban solution to that problem was now wholly appropriate. Also got a bit heated over the (lack of) additional school places created for the Wimpey development. And Carol's helpful suggestion of cubs to involve Henry in the Long Ashton community!! Really don't feel like going on Monday but have got to go down fighting!

I assume no luck with Northleaze? We had a bit of a spat with Carol Moss, it all got a little bit heated. Certain amount of satisfaction but no joy!

I think you might have sent me a message, but unfortunately I cannot see it! Might have been about campaigning for school solution through local press campaign / march. My husband & I are up for doing this, but unfortunately Daniel (our son) has just been taken very ill and is in Children's hospital with pneumonia. It is very stressful as he was only admitted last night, but he is in safe hands and should recover soon. Anyway, we are keen to contribute (my husband is PR manager for Bristol airport and has some ideas for engaging press / politicians), but we can't get involved just now because of Daniel. Hopefully he'll be better soon and we can do somthing. Katie

I was thinking that maybe it might be a good idea to
write to Ed Balls, the secretary of state for children and schools- get it noticed, possibly? It seems to me that if the council and our MP are blaming central government, (not that central government forced the council to build new homes without paying any attention to the local infrastructure), then someone in central government should respond. I thought also the secretary of state for communities and local government, Hazel Blears, as she is always talking about the importance of sustainable communities. And I am also quite keen to request a
lobby- if anyone was interested in going to London?

About Me:
My son, Théo, is one of the children refused a place at either school in Long Ashton for 2008. I also have a younger child, Aeneas.
I work very part time for Bristol PCT, and also teach a French class for pre-schoolers.
North Somerset council must provide a short term solution, which does not involve sending 4 year olds on unaccompanied buses to schools 7 miles away, for the children due to start school in 2008, followed by long term planning which takes into account the changing demography of the village. Our children have a right to be a part of their local community; even more than that, if our community is to be sustainable, they need to be a part of it.

Keep up the pressure on the council!!

They MUST see that even if they do build a new school, we still need a temporary solution in the interim....

Appeals success rates

Did anyone else see the Guardian on Friday? It lists the LAs with the highest and lowest school appeal success rates in the country....guess which is the lowest? Yes, that's right! North Somerset, with only 2.9%....compared to around 69% for BANES and for Somerest, and 82% for the highest, which is Durham or somewhere....

Petition

I think we have our 1000 signatures, give or take around 50 odd, thanks to Bex and all of you who have been round the neighbours and outside the co-op! I have requested that Blatchford and the head of the council receive it from us, and will post a date on here, hopefully in the next couple of days.
Well done everyone!

Council response re: petition!

Thought you might like to see the council's response to my request for a 5 minute slot to hand the petition over....
(I have replied, saying that they have missed the point of the petition, that we are well aware it will not change their minds, but it is, however, our right, as constituents, to have our opinions heard; if they do not wish to receive it, that is their prerogative, and we will go down to Weston anyway- it would make even more of a story, I think, if they refuse to take it!)
